historisch beladen monument<\/h2>\n<p>Walcheren wordt ook wel de \u2018Tuin van Zeeland\u2019 genoemd. Maar deze tuin heeft er niet altijd zo vredig bijgelegen. Walcheren heeft een rijk verleden aan oorlogen en twisten. Kijk alleen maar naar de namen van de steden en dorpen: Middelburg, Domburg, Oostburg en Souburgh. Ze verwijzen naar de Spaanse oorlog.<\/p>\n<p>Ook de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft zijn sporen achtergelaten. De Duitsers bouwden als onderdeel van de \u2018Atlantik Wall\u2019 het \u2018Landfront Vlissingen\u2019. Deze 15 kilometer lange linie was samengesteld uit tankgrachten, bunkers, anti-tankmuren en drakentanden (piramidevormige tankversperringen). Dit moest de havenstad Vlissingen tegen aanvallen vanaf land beschermen.<\/p>\n<p>De linie is nooit actief ingezet. De geallieerden schakelden met de inundatie van het eiland Walcheren in 1944 de linie uit. Op enkele gesloopte bunkers en gedempte stukken tankgracht na, is het Landfront nog compleet. Daarmee is het landschap rond Vlissingen de enige plek in Europa waar een dergelijke linie nog fysiek aanwezig is. Hoe zorg je dat het Landfront zijn verhaal kan blijven vertellen aan volgende generaties?<\/p>\n<p>BoschSlabbers wil de bezoeker zelf het verhaal laten ontdekken. Door elementen weer zichtbaar te maken, het Landfront toegankelijk te maken en verloren samenhangen te herstellen. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is het zichtbaar maken van de geschutsopeningen van de onder het zand verscholen bunkers.<\/p>\n<p>De tankgracht krijgt nieuwe functies, zoals de ecologische verbindingszone en een stelsel van fiets- en voetpaden. Ze nodigen uit om het Landfront te ontdekken. Dit maakt deze ijle lijn in het landschap beter zichtbaar. Langs en deels op het Landfront worden ook doorgaande wandel- en fietspaden aangelegd. Wandelaars en fietsers rijgen de bunkers op de route aaneen en krijgen zo een beeld van het oude Landfront.<\/p>\n<p>Na 60 jaar te zijn verbrokkeld en bijna in de vergetelheid te zijn weggezonken, wordt het Landfront weer een structuurlijn tussen Middelburg en Vlissingen. De massieve betonnen wand in de dijk prikkelt de fantasie van de voorbijganger. Wat is dit? Een dijkversteviging? Een hele lange bunker? Sinds enkele jaren grenst de muur aan een natuurgebied. In de visie worden de waarnemingsposten in de muur omgevormd tot vogelkijkpunten. De meest degelijke van Nederland.De visie is opgesteld in nauw overleg met de betrokken gemeenten, het waterschap en de Provincie Zeeland. Met dit project streven provincie Zeeland en de gemeente Veere ernaar om de voormalige verdedigingslinie in te zetten als kapstok voor het verbeteren van de waterhuishouding op Walcheren, en tegelijkertijd het militaire erfgoed nieuwe betekenis te
