Klimaatverandering, de afname van het areaal moeras door de zoektocht naar olie en het verlies aan nieuw sedimenttoevoer vanwege het kanaliseren van de Mississippi rivier, maakt dat de delta mogelijk over 40 jaar al voor een groot deel verdwenen is. Daarmee verdwijnt niet alleen een keur aan unieke landschappen met dito oude culturen (sommige wel 1200 jaar oud) maar ook ecologische kwaliteiten met economische perspectieven voor visserij, aquacultuur en recreatie. Daarnaast vormen de moerassen van de delta een natuurlijke barri\u00e8re die de veiligheid van grote steden als New Orleans, Houma en Thibodaux garanderen.<\/p>\n<p>Samen met Amerikaanse partners is in dit project gezocht naar mogelijkheden om in de toekomst op een aantrekkelijke, economische rendabele maar vooral veilige manier in de Mississippi delta te blijven wonen. Regeneratie van de moerassen en de delta op grote schaal is daarbij essentieel en wordt deels als gegeven beschouwd.
